How Do You Secure A Party Tent?

Renting the right size of party tent from party tent rentals isn’t enough—you have to secure it to the ground to prevent it from being blown by the wind. How do you secure a party tent? Here is how to do it:

How to secure a party tent on grass

If you will be having your event in the yard, you will be securing your tent on the grass. The best way to do it is to use stakes. Position the stakes 5-feet from each leg of the tent then drive them vertically into the ground until only 5” to 6” of the stake remains above the ground.

As you are inserting the stakes, take caution you don’t insert them at an angle as this will compromise the stability of the tent increasing the chances of it being blown when strong winds come.

Once the stakes are in place, attach guy ropes or ratchet straps between each leg and stake. To have an easy time, work from the corners of the tent and work your way inwards.

Are there any slacklines that remain after securing the tent? Secure them into place. For the ratchet straps, secure them on the ratchet buckle. For guy ropes, secure them at the stake.

How to secure a tent on concrete or stone surfaces

An ideal way to secure the tent is to drill holes in the concrete or stone surfaces but this will damage the surfaces. If you are renting the party venue, this isn’t an option as you will be penalized for it. Instead of drilling holes in the concrete, use tent weights to secure the tent instead.

The beauty is there are many types of tent weights in the market you can go for. The most common ones being:

Cider blocks

A standard Cider block weighs 28 pounds and you can use it to secure your party tent. Tie the cinder block to the leg of the tent using a bungee cord or rope.

While cinder blocks are an excellent and convenient way to hold down your tent, they can be a tripping hazard especially if there will be kids in the event. So use them with caution.

If there will only be adults in the party, you can go ahead and use the blocks but cover them with sheets or old towels so people don’t scrape themselves when they bump into them.

Exercise weights

Do you have access to exercise weights? You can use them to weigh down the party tent. All you need to do is to stack a few weights by the tent leg then thread a rope through the holes. Tie a knot around the weighs then another knot at the top of the tent frame.

Sand buckets

Although, they aren’t the most attractive units you can use to secure the tent, they get the work done when you need them. Begin with finding buckets that are large enough to carry enough weight to keep your tent secure. For convenience, use buckets with handles as you will easily tie a rope on them to secure the tent.

Once you have the buckets, fill them with sand or any other material and tie each bucket to each tent leg.

How to secure a tent on asphalt

You can secure a tent on asphalt in two ways: driving the stakes into the asphalt surface and securing the tent using concrete weights.

Driving stakes into the surface is easy, fast, economical, and strongly holds the tent in place. Drill holes into the surface then fill them with crushed stone. After this, patch the surface with actual asphalt. Even after removing the tent once the event is over, you can’t notice the holes on the asphalt.

If there are underground utilities such as water pipes and power lines, you shouldn’t risk drilling the holes. Instead, hold the tent in place using weights. For the tent to be secure, you have to use the right amount of weight or the tent will be blown in the event of strong winds.
